What is a Bike Trials?

“Mountain bike trials, also known as observed trials, is a discipline of mountain biking in which the rider attempts to pass through an obstacle course without setting foot to ground.” -wikipedia

What about a Trials Bike?

“Trials bikes are often designed without regard for attaching a seat. Competition riding does not require the rider to sit down and the omission allows for a lighter bike which interferes less with the body movements of the rider.” –wikipedia

 

Ok, so the story goes that ever since I was in secondary school… Some 10 years ago, I loved the idea of riding Trials. But never had the money to buy a proper Trials Bike. When I was trolling Togoparts.com/marketplace for a mountain bike (Another story), I saw a Trials Bike for sale @ $250

I jumped at the chance and contacted the Seller to view, next thing I know I now own the bike and I have to ride the bike back from Pasir Ris. Well, taking a cab would have been much easier, but where’s the fun in that!

So without a seat, super low gearing, fat tires and a rather feminine paint job. I set off!

… A very short while later, I set down at a bus stop huffing and puffing… How do those guys in mountain bike races continue on when their seat posts have gave way? Mad!

At my second pit stop along Old Tampines Road… The afternoon sun is getting to me…

Along Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 the last stretch home… By now my wrists, ankle, arms, calves were all complaining… Hot and dripping with sweat…

Only on the next day, did I find out what kind of work out riding in the standing position gave me. The whole body was aching but I felt good, it was only in the army days where one would find your entire body aching! haha. Awesome ride. Now to recuperate and do some Trials!

Commuted down down to Promenade MRT today, took only about 30 mins. Was going really slow too, other than the burning sun. Its all good. And since there was no bike rack in sight (pretty common in town), I looked around for a railing and locked my bike promptly. Might as well take a few pictures to show my point.

Above is a link from a local forum in hardwarezone singapore, a famous place for young teens to voice out their dismay and to look up on the latest gossips. Anyway, not so long ago when people on the forum was talking about cyclists, in 9 out of 10 posts, the members always discussed how cyclists need to pay road tax and that they don’t belong on the road.

Well there are still those people around but many are now of cyclist defending themselves. It is really something to have a perspective on both sides of the wall, and it takes things like this that show that Singapore is becoming a better place for cyclists however slow it may be.

 

A shocking post from “crossair” reads:

“Cyclists keep saying why can’t the car wait and overtake safely. However it is not the matter of one car. It creates a tailback in the lane the cyclist is in because vehicles are queuing, a few vehicles behind, the situation can be quite chaotic and dangerous as those cars cannot see what is causing the slowdown. In fact in UK, it is called a queue and cyclists routinely pull over onto the kerb to let vehicles through.

Ultimately, everyone will have to recognise that roads are predominantly ruled by cars, hence the dangers to bicycles are inherently present.

Both parties need to play their part to ensure the safety of everyone.”

 

I’m not sure about “cyclists routinely pull over onto the kerb to let vehicles through”, in fact i could bet my money that it is quite the opposite! Seeing that cycling in UK is more common and socially acceptable, with better infrastructure like cycle lanes and laws.

Cycling destination? Everywhere!

An NY cyclist proving a point about bike lanes…

And talking about accidents, while I was cycling last night. I had one of the scariest near misses…

Looking at the junction where the incident happened (the wrong way round), so looking at it from this angle is that I am coming from the traffic light to this carpark junction, I was heading straight up ahead.

From this angle, which is my point of view. Below will be the description of what happened…

I just passed a cyclist who was crossing the traffic light/pedestrian crossing illegally (aka j-walking or j-cycling, if you may), the cyclist saw me and hesitated to cross slowing down in the middle of the road and me passing him on the left. Note to all: Passing someone on the left is strongly discouraged.

I then heard a series of car horns a distance away. I glimpsed right a little (less than I usually would, maybe 5 degrees? As I expected traffic to slow down due to the cyclist I just passed and that up ahead was a turn). Next thing I know. A car was directly infront of me, turning left into the carpark tires screeching. I Braked hard, rear tires locking. Not enough time. I turned into the carpark with the car, narrowly missing contact.

“AB!!!!!!!!!!!!”, I shouted at the top of my voice (I am sorry I shouted that, fighting hostility with the same is never a good outcome.). My mind in a bit of doubt, maybe he didn’t see me. Me shouting would definitely alert him.

He had to slow down for a hump, I pulled to the right of the white Honda Jazz where is stopped and the windows rolled down. A young chinese man in his mid twenties, of what appeared to be a typcial ah beng. I kept my distance.

“Hey, what the hell? You nearly ran me off the road!”, my voice shaking from the adrenaline. (Actually he DID run me off the road.)

“You never hear my horn meh? Huh!”, he hastily answered clearly agitated from me shouting at him.

“What the hell? How do I know? I thought you were horning at him!” I gestured to the cyclist that I just passed.

I was in utter shock, I was supposed to have a rear view of him coming at me? Trying to kill me? As long as he horned I was supposed to yield to him? He had no regard of my life at all. Was it because I shouted at him? Was he drunk?

The best part was, the cyclist I passed, a passerby and the passenger inside his car did nothing to help me. Singapore is truly a fine country.

 

As a lesson to me, install a mirror on my bike. always look right when approaching a junction where vehicles can turn left. It has saved me many times before, ride safe guys!

If there is one thing that I like about things on a bike than new bling blings, expensive parts, carbon, DIY bike hikes, etc. Is… Is… Well.

Again, a drunk driver. What I want to know is, what has been done since the accident take involved cyclist Ms Evelyn Toh, 39 source forum

The one thing we cyclist can’t guard against are drunk drivers, there has been much publicity over cyclist that went down due to drunk drivers. One of them that I remember clearly is author of pedaldamnit Ben, he was killed by a drunk doctor just in front of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. And a much hyped about Ghost bike was put up in remembrance at the scene. Only to be taken down by order of LTA.

I then came across this quote,

“The [London] cycle superhighways, for example, could easily be segregated along much of the route. Finally, training also needs to be stepped up when teaching new drivers. This way the next generation of drivers on our roads will be more aware of cyclists. This could be phased into the driving test and potentially require a new motorist to spend part of their lesson on a bike to get a different perspective of the road and how you do feel vulnerable.” – Andreas Kambanis, blogger, London Cyclist

I think it would really be an eye opener for motorists, except that maybe not everyone is able to cycle.

And another quote I read,

“This drunk should have crashed his car into the back of a dumper truck, but chose instead a pickup. Think again how cheap our lives are when we are out cycling on weekends between 4 to 7 am. You may think less traffic is safe, but studies have shown that less traffic means more speeding and reckless driving. And there are many drunk drivers behind the wheels at those hours. I think it is much safer to cycle in peak or heavy traffic, at least people are not speeding but there is congestion only.” -Clarance Tan

I guess it makes commuting during heavy traffic safe from drunk drivers, but again other terrors of the road come about. Mostly traffic itself.

I just saw a similarity, although distant… Both had white blue black theme and offroad capability. I miss the thrill of going offroad!

This is more of a repost from my personal blog… Since my dad recently told me that the police has sent me a letter regarding the incident. Not sure about the letter’s content though.

Basically I was cycling home from school, on Bukit Timah Road. heading towards Adam Road from just before National Junior College. Bukit Timah road is a rather nice place to cycle, espeacially the direction of which I was heading. It always felt like a really minor descent, nice straight road with few traffic lights and decent sized road width. I was spinning on full outer, going faster than usual. But being careful, as most cars think cyclists move at the speed of pedestrians. Cautious about cars about to enter the road from the left and buses that were overtaking me.

Right, so I was spinning saw some dude flagging for a taxi. Just before the bus stop for NJC under the bridge. Next thing I know, from the corner of my eye, coming from the right. A yellow city cab. A new Hyundai Sonata. Red brake lights come on. I’m on the brakes hard. The Taxi swerves in. My rear tires start to skid. I endoed into his rear bumper.

I looked at the guy who flagged the Taxi, he was obviously in a rush to go somewhere. Staring at me. I gave him a “you still want to take this taxi I’m gonna start yelling at you look.” And he started running away, to try get another taxi. The driver still oblivious to what has happened was wondering where his customer went. And slammed on the boot of the taxi and he got out.

The picture shows the first thing he did when he came out. I’m fine thank you. After his inspection he asked me in Mandarin, “You hit my car ah?”.

I replied” Ya, you didn’t see me ah?”

“Never, really never”

“IC please.”

“Why you want my IC”, takes out his IC.

“I want to make a police report.” Actually, I just wanted to “take” down his details and basically scare him so he doesn’t drive that way again.

“Boy, No need make police report la. Why you want to make?”

“So that if you do it again, the police has records that you are a repeat offender. And justice will be served.”

The taxi driver was pissed, he took another look at his precious bumper and drove off. What really made me angry was that he wasn’t the least bit apologetic, didn’t care whether i was hurt, and even tried persuading me to do away with the police report.

So, I didn’t to make the police report anyway. Who knows? Maybe he has a dozen drivers horning him from behind thanks to his dangerous techniques used to get customers. If he keeps it up, people are going to get hurt.

When I made the police report, I asked the officer, “It’s true I was unhurt, but can I make a police report for the record?”

“Actually, as long as a accident involves a pedestrian. You must make a police report. Cyclists are considered pedestrians.” The officer said as-a-matter-of-factly.
